Longwood medical area
 Just
beyond Northeastern University is a unique concentration of 21 medical institutions.
In 1906 Harvard Medical School, after buying 26 acres of open farmland and marsh,
dedicated a quadrangle of five marble-faced buildings on Longwood Avenue. Harvard
sold some of the land to other hospitals so Harvard students would benefit from
the interaction. The Longwood Medical and Academic Area has four of the top hospitals
granted money by the federal government's National Institutes of Health-making
it the single most concentrated area for medical research in the United States.
