From the eighteenth century
to the present, Boston business men and women have instigated financial innovations
that have dramatically changed the way the nation banks and invests, and in the
process have made possible so many other innovative ventures. Boston pioneered
joint stock companies and the "trust." In the second half of the nineteenth century,
Boston financiers like Charles F. Adams, the son and grandson of presidents, financed
railroads and mines in the west. Major financial innovations have continued over
the past century, making Boston the #3 city in the world for asset management.
